Simplified Chinese Dong Yu Ping Yu is one of the four main islands of Penghu South Four Islands National Park (Note 1), located in Dongping Village, Wang'an Township, Penghu County, adjacent to Xiyue Ping Yu. Dong Yu Ping Yu is the last island formed by the volcanic lava of Penghu, dating to about 8 million years ago. Situated eastward of Wang'an Island, the two islands are approximately 10 nautical miles apart. Their waters boast an exceptionally high coverage of coral, a rich and colorful marine ecosystem, and undeveloped terrestrial areas preserving Penghu houses, vegetable farms built from basalt and coral reef rock, and the flourishing colonial-style buildings of the heyday. The island is divided into a north–south elongated block, surrounded by steep sea cliffs. The north shore has several winding rock veins, the south shore features expansive sandy beaches, and the west shore has a small beach. Villages are mainly located in the depressions to the west and southwest; the slopes of the north–south blocks are dominated by wide vegetable farms (Note 2) and terraced fields, creating a unique cultural landscape. Currently there are few residents, and the main industries are tourism and fishing. The island’s attractions include viewing the Taizai, Lulin Island, Qingshu Stone, Dong Yu Ping Yu villages, terraced fields and vegetable farms, and basalt joint landscapes. Taizai is a massive rock at the harbor wharf resembling a Guan Gong statue; almost entirely exposed basalt, long subjected to seawater and weathering, giving surrounding rocks a sandy yellow hue. Lulin Island, visible from the southern coast, is locally called “Sizijiao” and features a broad sea erosion platform covered with various intertidal organisms. Qingshu Stone is a conglomerate basalt formation resembling a frog crouching. Dong Yu Ping Yu villages are distributed across the island’s south, central, and north regions; the houses are primarily traditional Minnan architecture, arranged from south to north along hillside windbreaks in a counter‑clockwise manner. Terraced fields and vegetable farms, located between the north–south blocks, were built to shelter from the strong northeasterly monsoon; here one can see the impressive terraces and remnants of vegetable farms, offering a glimpse of past agricultural prosperity. The basalt joint landscape on the back hill displays a variety of geological features such as sea‑eroded gullies, pillars, and caves. Centered on Jinlong Tower, a sea‑eroded arch lies to the left; looking toward the sea, one can see sea‑eroded gully topography. To the right are columnar and sheet joints formed at different cooling times of magma, underlain by volcanic breccia layers. Within the boundaries of Penghu South Four Islands National Park, resources on each island are limited. Tourists are urged to cherish these resources and to take their litter off the island, not adding to its burden. Note 1: Penghu South Four Islands include Dong Yu Ping Yu, Xiyue Ping Yu, Dongji Island, Xiji Island, and surrounding reefs under Wang'an Township. Note 2: A vegetable farm is a building structure with walls on all four sides made of basalt or dolomite, able to withstand strong winds and allow crops to grow successfully. **Suggested Stay Time** 4 hours or overnight
