新北市永和區博愛街7號
Yang San-lang is a master of Taiwanese oil painting and occupies an important place in the island’s modern art history. He studied in Japan and France and, throughout his life, championed the development of local painting. Floors one to four display representative works from every period of his career—mountains and rivers, figure studies, travel scenes—each composition rigorous and richly colored. The fifth floor is devoted to paintings by Madame Yang: still-lifes of bottled flowers and native gardens, the fruit of more than seventy years of refined, elegant brushwork. Beside the museum, a white wooden house faces a lotus pond; this was Yang’s residence and studio. Preserving much of the original Wangxi Villa, it blends Japanese and European grace beneath ancient, luxuriant banyans. The ground floor holds quiet, tasteful living quarters; the steep-roofed second floor, lit by a north window, remains his studio, brushes and tools arranged exactly as he left them. Beyond the walls of green maples and white magnolias, bronze reliefs by Wang Ying-hsin of the Tai-Yang Art Association—"Light of Life" and "The Shepherd of Benevolence"—honor Yang’s lifelong devotion to art and existence: "Even if we do not obtain all we desire, we must still possess a life of abundance."
