Guandu, Golden Waterside, Bali Left Bank Cycling Trail

2024-04-11
Prior to flowing into the Tanshui River, the Keelung River gracefully turns around Sheshan Island, preserving a precious expanse of rice fields along its northern bank and west of Huanggang Creek, making the highly urbanized metropolis of Taipei a rare gem. These rice fields are connected directly with the estuary mangrove forest nature reserve, creating a short and peaceful escape from the city's noise. Cycling through the area offers the best way to appreciate the simplicity, authenticity, and laid-back charm of past rural life. Strolling along the dike road at sunset, one can enjoy the gentle river breeze, birdsong, and vibrant ecology of Guandu Nature Reserve, where a uniquely romantic and leisurely sense of wilderness fills the air.

The bicycle path through Guandu Plain is entirely non-enclosed. It starts at western endpoint Guandu Temple, extends eastward along the tidal protection dike of Guandu to Baxian Fude Temple, then turns 90 degrees northward across Guandu Plain until reaching the southern side of the MRT track on Beitou Zhongyang North Road at the Nangang area. Beyond this point lies Dajia Road in Beitou, renowned for its rice fields, which borders the military school's western edge. Visitors unable to bring their own bicycles would find Guandu Temple as a convenient starting point; it is near an MRT station and allows bicycle or tandem bike rentals. Former roadside stalls near Guandu Temple have been completely removed, replaced by well-maintained pedestrian walkways. Fishing boats that once docked beside the small bridges crossing Zhonggang River have also been relocated from their former coastal anchorage to along the Tanshui River. While this change reduces the nostalgic appeal of boats bobbing in flat-bottomed junks, the waterways now display a cleaner, more refreshing appearance.
