The name "Ximending" comes from the Japanese colonial period, when most residents lived within the walls of Taipei City. This area outside the western gate was their main recreation spot. In the early days, cinemas were the main commercial activities here, and later department stores and other entertainment venues gradually moved in. After the completion of the Zhonghua Market in 1961, Ximending once became the largest commercial and entertainment center in the country.
After a period of silence during the 1990s, Ximending, driven by the MRT and government planning, transformed into Taipei's first landmark pedestrian zone. On weekends, this place is always crowded, with people jamming the verandas and streets. Whether it's food, clothing, or entertainment, all kinds of trendy, interesting products can be found here, making it the busiest street in Taipei. It is not only a gathering place for youth culture and street performances, but also a popular spot for young people to dress up and go on dates. Next to Wuchang Street, the "American Street" is filled with American-style hip-hop clothing, unique fashion, and graffiti art, giving Taipei a touch of foreign flair.
