Wulai District is known for its hot springs and mountain cherry blossoms. Wulai is also the northernmost indigenous mountainous area in Taiwan, with residents mainly being Atayal people. The name "Wulai" comes from the Atayal language, "Ulay", which means "be careful, the water is hot" (Kiluh-ulay). The Atayal people in Wulai District were referred to as "Kutuxan" or "Quchi Fan" during Qing and Japanese rule. Tonghou Creek is located in northern Taiwan and is the largest tributary of Nanshi Creek. Its basin is distributed in the northeastern part of Wulai District, New Taipei City. The creek originates from Mount Hungluo and flows west-northwest to Xiaoyi. After converging with the Ayu Creek, it continues to flow to Wulai and empties into Nanshi Creek. The upper reaches of Tonghou Creek have the Tonghou Ancient Mountain Trail, which was originally a path created by the Atayal people for hunting and migration. A check dam near the 4 km mark, where the creek water flows through artificial blocks, is one of the private shooting spots for photographers. The Tonghou Ancient Mountain Trail, which is 17 km long, connects to Jiaoxi Township, Yilan County. Tonghou Creek features a valley terrain and serves as a water source for the Taipei region (Jade Spring Reservoir). Visitors need to apply for vehicle and personnel entry permits before entering the mountains. The area boasts rich and complete natural ecology, attracting dozens of bird species. It is one of Taiwan's top 10 best bird-watching spots. With a landscape resembling an oil painting, it was also chosen as a filming location for the movie "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale".
