A young couple’s dream: a cottage brimming with European charm, standing aloof and proud, detached from the world. Born of that dream and the hope of writing a new chapter, “48HOME” is sprouting forth in a brand-new guise. Drawing on the sharp sensibility honed while studying advertising design, the 60-year-old house began to receive its facelift in 2011 (the year 100 of the Republic). Like many reborn old buildings, proprietor Ms. Chang feels a mission to preserve its historic value; what sets her apart are the originality and personal style she cultivated through years of teaching country-style decorative painting. Whether bending aluminum wire into decorative baskets and kitchen tools or breathing life into vivid carvings and bright painted pieces, every item springs from her gentle, meticulous hands. To devote herself fully to “48HOME,” she suspended the country-painting classes she had run for years, yet her passion for creation never waned; her ideas now fill every corner of the shop. “48HOME” is both her private showcase and a meeting place for fellow lovers of decorative painting, where surprised smiles and laughter abound—and inspiration never ceases. From the outset of renovation she spared no cost, insisting on imported, non-toxic paints; once open, she personally sourced ingredients, choosing fresh, warm carcass beef and the like. Each such insistence demands time before results show, so she says, gratefully, “Thanks to my husband’s unconditional support, I can serve guests in the way I believe best.” Beyond attracting devotees of European country style, “48HOME” has also served as a wedding-photo location, giving couples timeless memories. Yet its quiet-lane fame rests not only on distinctive European décor but on ever-present creative touches and a space that always feels fresh and warm.
