Bishan Yan Kai Zhang Sheng Wang Temple

2017-06-29
台北市內湖區碧山路24號
Bishan Yan is located on Bishan Mountain in Neihu. The temple enshrines Chen Yuan Guang, a national hero who opened up Fujian, as well as two generals, Li Boyao and Ma Ren. Chen Yuan Guang pioneered the area of Zhangzhou in Fujian during the late Tang dynasty, and is regarded as the guardian deity of Zhangzhou people, and is respectfully called "the Holy King of Opening Zhangzhou." Bishan Yan is the largest temple of the Holy King of Opening Zhangzhou in Taiwan, and it is very prosperous. According to legend, when a person from Zhangzhou Prefecture named Huang brought his family across the sea to settle in Taiwan, he saw this place as a rare and auspicious location, so he hung the incense he was carrying on a stone cave and worshiped before leaving. Later, there were many bandits in the area below the mountain, and they robbed and plundered, making the people suffer greatly. In 1751, when the bandits were about to attack the top of the mountain, they suddenly saw bright light shooting from the mountain top, and the sound of war drums. It turned out that the sacred stone of the incense that was previously hung had split into three parts, with the central one being the Holy King, and the two stones on either side being the generals Li and Ma. The surrounding stones rolled down the mountain, causing the bandits to abandon their weapons and flee. Local residents, upon hearing this, came to worship here, and indeed, the deity blessed them. They then built a small stone temple. Later, as the number of visitors increased, the original small stone temple was no longer sufficient for the large number of worshippers, so they built this main hall on the original site. Later, there were several natural disasters, and after several repairs, with the efforts of many local people, believers, and the temple management committee, it was expanded to its current size. Bishan Yan is located on a high ground, offering a view of the Taipei Basin. Standing on the platform in front of the temple, one can see the winding Danshui River, the Lyu Yu Mountain, and terraced fields, with the water and mountain scenery complementing each other. At night, the beautiful night view of Taipei 101 and the Yuanshan Grand Hotel can be fully enjoyed.
