On Bo’ai Street in Yonghe District, New Taipei City, a handful of retired teachers who hoped to nurture community-building founded the “New Taipei City Yonghe Art Education Development Association.” Their goal was to weave art into daily life and bring it right into the neighborhood. The 500-meter-long Bo’ai Art Street has since grown rich in humanistic atmosphere; it is an art street reborn through a special urban-renewal project. The finest urban art should not remain trapped inside museums—it ought to spill onto the streets, or turn the streets themselves into art. A specially paved pedestrian walkway stretches from Yonghe Road all the way to the far end of the street at the Yonghe branch of Chuang Ching Vocational High School. Terracotta roof tiles and white parapet walls meet artistic arched gates and side windows decorated with carved motifs. More than twenty large-scale reproduction oil paintings by Yang San-lang line the walls. Midway down the quiet street sits the Yang San-lang Art Museum, run by the local artist. Come stroll beneath the green canopy of golden-rain trees, step into the museum to enjoy its rich collection of paintings, and wander the tranquil lanes—there are plenty of little surprises tucked into every corner, waiting for you to discover.
