Little Red Cliff

新北市新店區碧潭風景區內
On the west bank of the Xindian River, the valley is dotted with giant boulders; scoured by the current, they rise in sheer, unbroken cliffs. Because they resemble the Red Cliffs of China’s Yangtze River, and because men of letters compared the spot to the Red Cliffs celebrated in Su Shi’s “Rhapsody on the Red Cliff,” local people call it the Little Red Cliff. Blessed with fine mountains and clear water, Xindian offers a network of trails that bring visitors close to both. Whether it’s the Hemei Mountain trail beside the suspension bridge or the Lion’s Head Mountain trail near the MRT station, both are perfect for family outings. For a longer trip, rent a bicycle and follow the well-planned riverside bike path, taking in the full beauty of the Xindian River. Hikers can transfer to a bus or the free tourist shuttle to tackle one of Xindian’s many mountain trails—the Yinhe Cave trail, the Shizitou Mountain Guard Line trail, the Erpazi Botanical Garden, the Shuangcheng trail, or the Guangxing Wetland Eco-trail—enjoying a rare dose of phytoncides in the city and breathing deep in the “forest.”
