The Hemei Tongtong Academy, designated as a National Heritage Site, was established in the seventh year of the Qing Xianfeng Emperor (1857), and is one of the more intact ancient academies preserved in Taiwan today. Recently, it has undergone restoration involving the replacement of beams and pillars to restore its former appearance. Adjacent to Hemei Junior and Senior High Schools, the central hall enshrines the shrine tablet of Venerable Master Zhu Wen and the statue of the God of Literature. The eastern wing honors the eternal merits of individuals who contributed to its various restoration efforts, while the western wing is dedicated to the Deity of Earth and Grains. It also retains a large section of weathered original wood from its initial construction. The courtyard is spacious with lush greenery, and at dawn and dusk, people often come to visit, play, and relax.
