In Miaoli, a quiet corner of the Shih潭 Longitudinal Valley, there used to be terraced fields where people grew rice. In the late 1960s, the government promoted the planting of mulberry trees, and people started raising silkworms. The farm began to specialize in sericulture, starting with the production of round cocoons and then switching to flat cocoons. However, in the 80s, due to a shift in agricultural policy, sericulture was abolished, and there was no one to buy the silk from. Facing a vast expanse of lush green mulberry fields and an uncertain future, the farm owner decided to preserve this valuable historical industry in Taiwan. They wanted Taiwanese children to see the adorable silkworms and learn about their life cycle. This marked the beginning of the "Chyuan Ming Ecological Education Sericulture Farm". In this pesticide-free ecological mulberry farm, thousands of silkworms are raised. Visitors can observe the silkworms eating mulberry leaves, growing, spinning silk, pupating, and emerging as moths. The courtyard is home to various insects and small animals that fly and run around. At night, fireflies accompany visitors, and if lucky, one can spot a large silkworm moth. Chyuan Ming, the owner, has over 20 years of experience in sericulture and is currently Taiwan's only professional sericulture farm. The farm is also a demonstration teaching site designated by the Miaoli County Government. Visitors can participate in guided tours that cover the basics of mulberry leaf cultivation and silkworm raising. They can even try their hand at making handmade flat silk quilts. The farm provides professional, engaging, and easy-to-understand explanations, allowing visitors to gain a deep and comprehensive understanding of the silkworm ecosystem and experience the fascinating world of silkworms.
