The hot springs in Jinshan District, New Taipei City, belong to the Datun Mountain geothermal zone. The spring water gushing out at the Gangkou Public Bath is originally colorless and transparent; certified by the Taiwan Hot Spring Research and Development Center as an “iron spring,” the water turns golden-brown when its iron ions oxidize on contact with air. In Japan this quality is praised as the “golden bath.” The pool bottom accumulates oxidized iron deposits, and the surface shows mineral flotilla (called yu-no-hana in Japan); both are natural phenomena. The outdoor foot-bath uses a flow-through system; letting the raw spring cool to a comfortable temperature before soaking is recommended for better health benefits. Located near Jinshan Beach, Lion’s Head Mountain Park, and Jinshan Qingshui Wetland, the pool is perfect after a seaside stroll: rest here, watch eagles soaring overhead and waterbirds hunting in the Huangxi Stream, and as the golden sunset glows, soak in the “golden bath” and savor tranquil beauty.
