South Island City, a castle built from basalt blocks quarried on Qimei Island, features a design distinct from ordinary walls. The black basalt walls form a structure of about two stories, with the main gate and walls composed of arched and bracket-style columns. The walls are remarkably sturdy, giving off an impressive aura; the arched gate and the continuous arched wall sections create a skyline where the curves meet the blue sky, showcasing the city's artistic and three-dimensional feel. The origin of South Island City reflects the ancestry of the Chen family on Qimei Island. Inside the stone gate of South Island City, there is a plaque titled “Reconstruction Record of South Island City,” recording that Chen Jin, a descendant of the Chen family in Qimei, moved from Ba Zhou Island to South Island (an ancient name for the place) during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, settling in the local “Jianshan Foot” with his mother and marrying into the Zhang family. After decades of hard work, the family prospered and accumulated wealth. To protect against thieves, they built South Island City, where the entire family lived within its bounds, and the local place name came to be known as “Inner City.” South Island City is a memorial constructed by the Chen family of Qimei to honor their ancestors' labor in developing Qimei. The Chen family provided the buildings and land of South Island City free of charge to the public, making it a well-known landmark on Qimei Island. **Suggested visit duration:** 0.5 hours
