Welcome to the Chiayi Time Tunnel Historical Museum, located within Chiayi Park. The park is rich in cultural and historical materials, serving as a microcosm of Taiwan's modern history. The museum complex consists of two buildings: the Shrine Annex with an area of 267 square meters and the Administration Building with an area of 208 square meters. The two buildings are connected by a corridor, forming a substantial integrated space when the central corridor serves as the connecting axis.
Observing the Japanese "Shoin-zukuri" architectural style, the layout, architectural elements, and functional design are quite rare and unique in Taiwan, showcasing elegant artistic expression and high craftsmanship value.
The two buildings of the Historical Museum adopt the Japanese "Shoin-zukuri" architectural form, featuring elements such as ceilings, paper sliding doors, and exterior corridors. The roof is in the "Iruyane" style, similar to the traditional Chinese Xieshan-style roof. The eaves, ridge, fascia, and垂脊 all employ Japanese architectural elements. The upper part of the exterior walls features ship-shaped bracket sets (斗拱), while the lower half adopts the "Maekabe" style. The foundation is a low-rise stilts-style construction, and the doors and windows are primarily sliding doors, with a few being push-pull doors; the windows include fixed-grid glass sliding windows, fixed-grid windows with added sliding glass panes, and paper sliding windows.
The Shrine Annex, Administration Building, Handwater Shed, and Offering Storehouse are representative of Japanese residential culture. Notably, the Offering Storehouse features a concrete exterior wall imitating wooden construction, which is quite unique.
Following the City Government's commission to professional units, under the principles of "not altering the main structure," "preserving the original exterior appearance," "restoring the original architectural elements," and "considering compatibility with the park environment," the buildings underwent successive restoration.

The Chiayi City Historical Museum consists of two buildings: the Shrine Annex and the Administration Building, which were originally affiliated with the Chiayi Shrine during the Japanese colonial period. The Chiayi City Historical Museum was designated as a municipally protected historic site and was established in 1943 (Showa 18). The Shrine Annex was used for purification and preparation before shrine ceremonies, while the Administration Building served as the administrative office for shrine affairs.
In October 1998, these two buildings were approved by the Chiayi City Government as municipally protected historic sites and were named the "Chiayi City Historical Museum." On September 15, 2001, the museum opened, showcasing the people and events of Chiayi, interweaving past and present to inspire local affection and awareness. The Historical Museum is the best place to understand Chiayi's history, and exploring Chiayi begins with a visit to the museum.
