An essential military sight in Dongying with its long staircase is the Antong Cavern. This massive war readiness tunnel, constructed during the Cold War around 1971, was opened by the military in 2002 and later renovated by the Makung Management Office, finally being accessible to the public in 2004. The camouflaged entrance of the tunnel is near the Marine Corps Training Center. Visitors proceed downward along a steep slope from the entrance and descend approximately 464 steps before entering the tree-branch-like maze of interconnected tunnels. The Antong Tunnel, which traverses Erchong Mountain, is about 300 meters in total length. The corridor features eight passages, including command quarters, large and small bedrooms, a Zhongshan Room, an operations room, ammunition storage, bathrooms, and even a piggery—each connected to the sea. Observation points, now popular viewing platforms for ocean views, seagulls, and fiords, were previously placed on seaside cliff edges functioning as gunports. From these openings, rock formations named "Indian Head" and "Little Dog's Head" can be observed, making the area a compelling stop for tourists. Exploring the tunnel reveals its preserved structures with rich tourism value. Every April, protected bird species like the black-tailed gull and dark-side gull migrate from Japan, reproducing on the cavern entrance and nearby islet rocks. From the viewing platforms, visitors enjoy panoramic vistas of turquoise seas, blue skies, peculiar rock formations, and swirling gulls, an awe-inspiring spectacle that annually attracts bird enthusiasts in summer. Notices: 1. A full tour requires 30–60 minutes. The staircase is steep with continuous ascents and descents. Visitors must psychologically prepare for steep upward climbs on the return journey. 2. Please promptly switch lights on/off while entering/exiting. Vehicles are strictly prohibited due to the tunnel’s sloped terrain. 3. Swallow gulls are sensitive to noise. Visitors are requested to speak softly when birding in Antong Tunnel to avoid disturbing nesting gulls.
