南投縣鹿谷鄉鳳凰山麓大石上
The Batong Ancient Trail holds a pivotal place in Lugu Township. In 1875, Qing-dynasty general Wu Guangli built the roughly 125-kilometer route that crossed the Central Mountain Range to open a path to the eastern backlands—today’s Batongguan Historic Trail. It began at Linqipu (modern-day Zhushan, Nantou County), passed through Fenghuang Mountain in Lugu Township and Dongpu, crossed Xiuguluan Mountain, and ended at Pushige (today’s Yuli, Hualien County). Most of the trail within Lugu Township has since collapsed, but on a boulder at the foot of Fenghuang Mountain the inscription “萬年亨衢” is carved. The frame measures 150 cm high and about 123 cm wide; the four vigorous, powerful characters proclaim that the opened route would bring endless benefit to travelers and merchants for generations. The site is now a designated national historic monument.
