The white building nestled in a quiet alley is a small family-style museum that records the glory of Taiwanese coral and preserves the cultural history of Southern Ao's coral. Southern Ao's coral industry was once the most brilliant page in the history of the global coral industry. Due to the rare gemstone coral found in the waters surrounding Taiwan, the harvested coral raw materials are extremely fine in texture, rich and complete in color, and have the highest production in the world. Therefore, Southern Ao plays a crucial role in the entire coral industry ecosystem and has become the main distribution center for the coral industry in Taiwan.
During the heyday of Taiwan's coral industry, there were over 400 coral harvesting boats in Southern Ao, which was a testament to the prosperity of the time. However, today, the number of coral harvesting boats has dwindled to around 50, reflecting the rapid decline of the coral industry.
Witnessing this rise and fall, Lai Rongxing decided to preserve coral and record it for future generations of Taiwanese descendants. He converted his home into the "Coral Art Museum," showcasing many exquisite coral works. The museum uses local Southern Ao culture and warm human emotions to make visitors feel the warmth of the place.
The museum has three floors, serving as an art space, a humanistic story museum, and a coffee shop. The first floor is the host's coral coffee shop and gift shop; the second floor is the gemstone coral humanistic space, which deeply introduces Southern Ao's culture and coral industry, as well as the ecology and types of gemstone coral; and the third floor is the Coral Art Gallery, which mainly exhibits the curator's decades-long collection of gemstone coral fine carvings and sculptures.
Visitors are recommended to stay for at least half an hour, and with professional guided tours, they can experience a journey through the ages of Southern Ao's coral.
