Old Times, Fresh Stories – Heritage Curry in a Timber House
The side rainboards and the tiny “Borrower”-style vent that recalls Studio Ghibli’s “The Secret World of Arrietty” let the hinoki house quietly tell its own history. The owner of “Old Times, Fresh Stories” trained in healthcare; after running the An Lan Ju Hostel on the side, she came to treasure Chiayi’s forest railway and its Japanese-era wooden homes. When she spotted a “for-rent” notice on this old building, Angela grabbed it at once, determined to preserve it for the next generation.
A catering novice, she stumbled for years until 2020, when the Chiayi City government paired her with a professional marketing team. Together they positioned the café as a “Japanese-old-house curry specialist,” setting both décor and menu. All curries are house-developed, including Chiayi-rare soup curry. Angela’s medical background drives her to weave in the five senses—sight, sound, taste, touch, smell—so guests can savor a meal and exercise their brains at the same time.
