Sustainable Inheritance of Fish-Weir Culture: The stone weirs along Xinwu’s coast are mainly distributed in Kejian, Shenken, and Yongxing; the Yongxing weirs have already vanished, leaving only those in Kejian and Shenken. On 8 April 2019 the Taoyuan City Government, in accordance with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, registered the better-preserved weirs No. 2, 3, and 6 within the Kejian group as cultural landscapes, thereby strengthening protection of the weirs. All eleven existing weirs are scheduled for full restoration by 2023, and efforts will continue to pass on and preserve the construction techniques, with the Xinwu Stone-Weir Story House conveying the century-old history of the weirs.
Xinwu Stone-Weir Story House: The Kejian No. 1 guard post was built in 1990 as police dormitories, set inside the coastal windbreak forest beside Kejian Beach in Xinwu, commanding beautiful scenery. After martial-law withdrawal and decommissioning, it gradually became an unused idle space. In September 2018 the Taoyuan City Government invested roughly NT$7 million in its renovation and revitalization. Completion in March 2020 transformed it into the Xinwu Stone-Weir Story House and visitor center, allowing tourists to learn about local traditional fishing culture while serving the dual functions of cultural inheritance and environmental education.
1F Fish-Weir Culture Gallery: Displays of stone-weir models and artifacts trace the development of Xinwu’s weirs. Via the “Xinwu in Your Palm” app developed with local youth, AR technology simulates the fun of fishing during the weirs’ ebb and flow.
2F Ocean Maker Classroom: Extending from weir-culture preservation to marine-environment advocacy, the Ocean Maker Classroom uses DIY up-cycling of marine debris to raise public awareness of ocean protection through hands-on interaction.
3F Weir Viewing Deck: An endless seascape spreads before you, taking in all of Xinwu’s beautiful coastline; feel the sea breeze and the sound of breaking waves, order a coffee, and leisurely enjoy a relaxed afternoon. Once a police guard post and dormitory, the renovated Kejian No. 1 post now passes on Xinwu’s century-old stone-weir culture in an entertaining and educational way, and offers visitors hands-on weir-building experiences.
