Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean Gubao Island is located northwest of Baisha and southwest of Jibei Island, forming a basaltic square plateau. The island stretches about 1 km from south to north and is the largest uninhabited island in the Penghu archipelago. Most of the island’s basalt is porous, and the surface is covered with a layer of iron‑rich quartz sandstone, creating a striking contrast. Gubao Island is an island in Baisha Township, Penghu County, Taiwan, and it is the largest uninhabited island in the north‑sea area. The island runs north–south, about 1 km long, and consists mainly of four land masses and three small gorges forming a square plateau. The northern coast features a large sea‑erosion platform, and the east coast has a natural white‑sand beach in both the north and south. At the island’s harbor is an “English‑wheel sunken‑ship memorial monument,” located at the island’s highest point. The sea‑erosion platform on the north coast, subjected to long‑term wave action, is a famous natural source of kelp. The kelp is of high quality, and the harvest season begins in winter. Residents of Chikang Village travel by boat to harvest the kelp, creating a bustling scene reminiscent of a lively sea market. Penghu is renowned for its wild kelp production; locals refer to kelp as “black gold.” The northern side of Gubao Island is a completely natural, pollution‑free wild kelp area. The kelp grows from late October to the end of March the following year. In winter, the strong northeast monsoon and pounding waves stimulate kelp growth, making winter the harvest season, also known as the “black‑gold picking” season. The waters between Gubao Island and Baisha Island are the largest fishing ground for sea bream. Each year from April to September marks the sea bream breeding season in Penghu, with May being the spawning period for sea bream females. To preserve the sea bream’s ecosystem, this period is a no‑catch zone.
