Tamsui McIver Cemetery

2024-04-11
新北市淡水區真理街26號 (淡江中學後方)
This is where Dr. Mackay is laid to rest. Those who are buried in this cemetery are his family members and direct students. Originally, this was a wasteland adjacent to the foreigner's cemetery in Tamsui. Dr. Mackay had originally purchased it for retirement. After Dr. Mackay's death on June 2, 1901, his family followed his last will and built a wall separating it from the foreigners' cemetery, making it a family cemetery. The highest tombstone (like a candlestick) is Dr. Mackay's tomb, built by his students.

On the right is his "partner" Zhang Congming, then to the right are his daughter and son-in-law, and the outer layer are his disciples. To the left of Dr. Mackay are his eldest son and his wife, and to the left of them are his close relatives. The front of Dr. Mackay and his wife's tombstone is in English and the romanized Hokkien, and the back is in Chinese. This cemetery is now managed by Tamkang High School. There are currently 44 burial sites (including spirit graves), including Taiwanese, Canadian, and one Japanese. Every March 9th, many church members come here to sweep the graves and offer flowers.
