Shan Wanran Puppet Theatre was founded in 2002 by Huang Wushan. From an early age he trained under the two sons of the national-treasure budaixi master Li Tianlu—Chen Shih-huang and Lee Chuan-tsan—learning traditional hand-puppet techniques. After graduating in 2003 from the Graduate Institute of Theatre Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts, and mindful of his mentors’ dedication to passing on their art, he studied Hakka mountain songs with Hakka folk-song queen Lai Pi-hsia, infusing Hakka culture into traditional budaixi. He is now one of the few members of the younger generation in Taiwan with both professional performance skills in traditional hand-puppetry and a solid grounding in theatre theory, keeping the flame of the art alive. Shan Wanran Puppet Theatre recognizes the importance of perpetuating Hakka culture. At present it focuses on production and performance, actively participates in arts festivals, and is developing curricula that integrate Hakka theatre, Hakka hand-puppetry, and Hakka music. By using lively, engaging puppet performances, the troupe draws young Hakka audiences back to their cultural heritage, rekindles the Hakka spirit, and even enables non-Hakka communities to understand and appreciate the diversity and inclusiveness of Hakka culture.
