Made from glutinous rice, the rice cake needs no introduction—it is naturally one of the town’s most famous snacks. Most vendors still follow the traditional “tube rice cake” method, though the old earthenware tubes have been replaced by metal ones. Even so, rice cakes remain a common sight throughout Xiluo. Past the bustling Jianxing Road market, opposite the Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market, sits a tiny stall with no signboard, only two yellow cloth flags that read “rice cake.” Now in its second generation and operating for fifty years, the owner laughs that the flags were only added two months ago after relentless customer requests. The steamers used to make the rice cakes are fifty years old, exuding a strong old-time flavor. Known only to locals, the cakes here are dense yet fluffy, with distinct grains that are fragrant, chewy, and silky—utterly delicious.
