By day, the Paper Church is alive with fluttering butterflies; as night falls it exudes a quiet, warm glow. Frequent musical feasts and art exhibitions add an elegant, humanistic touch to the place. The design concept of the Paper Church derives from Baroque architect Bernini’s ideas for churches he built for the Roman Catholic Church. Shigeru Ban created a corridor-like space between the elliptical paper-tube structure and the outer wall; the paper tubes along the inner perimeter are set close together, while those at the entrance are more widely spaced. Once inside, daylight filtering through the translucent roof canopy produces a sublime sensation of ascension.
