Peace Bell

2018-07-31
台北市大安區忠孝東路4段
The Peace Bell prays for the safety of all people. Designed to commemorate the anniversary of the 921 Earthquake, it rings hourly on bustling squares to safeguard peace and pray that Taiwan may never again suffer such natural disasters. Hands pressed together at the top, along with 108 yellow porcelain balls, flow down with water into a small fountain below. When hands are pressed together, one connotes prayers, while the other connotes embracing inclusiveness, teaching us to embrace such changes and heal these wounds. The slowly flowing water from below represents the unending continuation of human vitality. Although the bell rings gently, it brings inner tranquility.
This Peace Bell, 6 meters in length and 5 meters in width, is crafted of bronze. It was co-designed by architect Yao Ren-Hsi and glass artist Wang Hsia-Jun, and fully funded by the Dharma Drum Mountain Cultural Education Foundation. Adorning the urban landscape, the Peace Bell constantly reminds us that when encountering deeply profound disasters, we should always maintain a humble heart.
