The traditional rice food shop "Dong Fan Xiang" was originally owned by a Hakka family from Zhuodong. The old owner, Liu Ronghua, had a mother, Luo Linsanmei, who used to plant lemongrass in Baimaoliang, Chiushi Township. She would also make Hakka snacks, rice desserts, and meat zong to sell on the train. In 1969, Liu Ronghua moved to the east coast of Chenggong Town and found that no one was selling Hakka snacks there. To cater to the locals' habit of eating rice, he started making and selling Hakka rice snacks. Since the area had a mix of Han Chinese and indigenous people, he called his Hakka rice snacks "bowl kueh" to make it more relatable, and it became his signature product.
The Liu family did not have a storefront and would sell their freshly made snacks on a small cart next to the market. Their snacks have been popular in Chenggong for over 50 years. When the third generation, Liu Junliang, took over, he renamed the shop "Dong Fan Xiang" to promote Hakka cuisine and encourage younger generations to return to their hometown to continue the family business.
