Mr. Liao Wen-he began playing glove-puppetry as a child. Because his puppets are larger than usual, his performances vivid and refined, and his scripts compelling—and because he can voice more than twenty distinct characters—every show draws an overflowing crowd. He has even been invited abroad for ticketed performances, bringing Taiwan’s traditional art onto the international stage. The Liao Wen-he Puppet Troupe was founded in 1976. In the days before television was widespread, troupes performing in theaters or outdoor stages across the island could always attract audiences. Once television took off, watching TV gradually became the public’s main leisure activity, and glove-puppetry audiences dwindled. Unwilling to bow to the decline of the art, Liao invested heavily in a major reform: enlarging the stage, acquiring more performance equipment, and remaining devoted to the art of puppetry. He preserves the most ancient traditional hand puppets and also created the nation’s largest immortal puppets and the biggest sets—backdrops up to 100 feet wide—constantly experimenting with new ways to present glove-puppetry.
