Chen De Xing Hall

2017-07-04
台北市大同區寧夏路27號
Chen De Xing Hall is a major ancestral temple for the Chen family in Taipei. It was designed and built by the famous Taiwanese master craftsman Chen Ying Bin. The double-eaved hip roof, wooden structure, and brackets of the front hall are exquisite, with smooth curves on the eaves and ridges, possessing great artistic value. The stone-carved twin dragon columns in the front hall are considered one of the earliest examples of the "one column with two dragons" in modern Taiwan, and have had a profound influence on the construction of temples later on. The main hall has a large-sized deity niche with rich wood carvings, with its delicate carved railings as a distinctive feature. The tin ritual objects and the immortals' candle stands in front of the niche are well-preserved, with exquisite shapes, making them rare examples in Taiwan. In addition to being used as a Chen family ancestral temple, it is also used as a kindergarten on a daily basis, and is well maintained. It has even won the "Preservation Contribution Award" in the 3rd National Cultural Heritage Preservation Award by the Ministry of Culture in 2014, and is definitely worth visiting. After visiting Chen De Xing Hall, you can also walk around the nearby Ningxia Night Market, which is full of strong Taiwanese flavor!
