高雄市前鎮區新光路61號
The Kaohsiung City Library’s main building is located on Xinguang Road and is a structure that blends plants, environmental protection, and culture. This eight‑storey new main building, with an outer square and inner circle, covers a floor area of 37,233 square metres. Its design concept is centered around trees as the architectural motif and books as the main character, creating a spacious and friendly environment where trees and the library coexist. In terms of architecture and design, the new main building of the city library features several breakthrough innovations: steel‑bar suspension construction, a suspended landscaped atrium, a 7.5‑metre‑high column‑free covered plaza, modular spatial arrangement, extensive green planting for carbon reduction and more—making it a new standard for green public buildings. The minimalist design style, coupled with natural greenery and a fragrant atmosphere of books, creates a serene and comfortable reading space. The warmth of Kaohsiung’s people is also present in the library; through private fundraising for books, the collection now exceeds 700,000 volumes, and the library houses a special “Gratitude Tree” to thank citizens and everyone for their participation, leaving an eternal mark on Kaohsiung’s culture. The first floor of the main building features an open, half‑tall space, and the top floor includes an aerial garden overlooking the harbor area. In this welcoming reading garden, like the old banyan tree in Zhuangtou, the sound of books and laughter fills the air, making it the most attractive cultural spot in the city, both day and night.
