Dadanwan has moved beyond its past history of military use and extensive oyster farming, now developing toward water-based tourism and recreational activities. However, promoting water recreation first requires ensuring good water quality. Realizing this, the Dadanwan Management Office has invested significant effort into long-term water quality monitoring. To improve water quality while restoring the original wetland landscape, the specific approach involves utilizing abandoned aquaculture ponds around the bay for transformation into constructed wetlands. These wetlands feature low infrastructure investment, low maintenance costs, ease of management, and multiple benefits such as micro-climate regulation and environmental enhancement, serving as wastewater treatment sites. As the wastewater processed by Dadanwan’s artificial wetlands primarily comes from effluent discharged by surrounding aquaculture ponds, and the water used in these ponds is sourced from the bay’s seawater, the wetlands must treat saline water rather than freshwater. Consequently, Dadanwan’s wetlands constitute one of the few saline artificial wetland systems in Taiwan, a notable characteristic. In fact, the aquatic plants cultivated in these wetlands have effectively improved the area’s original ecological landscape, expanded habitats for aquatic organisms, enriched and beautified the water scenery of Dadanwan, highlighting the region’s green ecological value.
