The Temple of Dharma Cloud, or Fayun Temple, is located in Wenshui Village at the border of Gongguan and Shitan Townships. The temple is one of Taiwan's four most famous Buddhist sacred sites. The original temple was constructed in 1912 but was rebuilt after being damaged by an earthquake. The new temple has a dignified and magnificent appearance and possesses a distinctive Tang dynasty style.
Inside the temple, the Grand Hall of the Venerable features a 9-foot-tall, 10-ton white jade Buddha donated by Singaporean Monk Hongzong. The courtyard outside the hall is filled with cherry blossom and plum trees. Notably, next to the temple, there is a Bodhi tree representing wisdom. The tree bears plenty of fruit between September and December.
The historic trail leading to the Temple of Dharma Cloud begins at the Kaikuang Village City God's Temple and ends at the Dharma Cloud Temple in the Dahu area. The 1.8-kilometer trail is an important route for early immigrants to develop Dahu's Shuwei Plain.
The original trail started behind the current Kaikuang Elementary School and crossed over the Jin'ao Mountain (also known as Jian Shan) to the saddle. From there, it descended to the Biyan Bridge of the Dharma Cloud Temple, leading to the areas of Shuwei Plain in Dahu and Wenshui in Shitan.
However, due to the construction of the Dharma Cloud Temple, the ancient trail was rerouted to the current military hiking trail. Unfortunately, the original path is now difficult to follow.
The straw-insulated cage of Wenshui Village is a unique and rare handicraft worth seeing.
