Datun Mountain Range - Guandu Nature Trail

2024-04-11
Flocks of migratory birds flying over Guandu's green plains display a truly beautiful sight. Viewing this scene from the hilltop is another form of happiness. Looking outwards, the Danshuei River hugs the Xindian Mountain, with the river and mountain surrounding the Guandu Plain. In the distant background, the thriving Taipei metropolitan area lies afar, and the entire Taipei Basin comes into full view.

Even though it takes quite a distance to reach the skyline from the MRT station, the distance along the way is no concern. Looking back at such a scenic route might even make one quicken their pace, because after ascending to a higher level, the vista is surely more expansive. After enjoying the mountain views, entering the Skyline Trail from the trailhead, the originally broad view suddenly becomes shaded by trees, as if stepping into another world secluded from civilization. As one walks along the small path, hidden in the forest's original scenery are scattered stones and felled tree trunks by the trailside. An adventurous spirit emerges from this woodland expedition. Hey, you have to climb steep slopes while holding onto ropes to pass, but with a bit of attention to the small stones near your feet, you'll be just fine. On weekends, nearby residents often come here for physical workouts.

The trail with countless ups and downs exceeds 2,500 meters in elevation, and the Skyline Trail itself has some steep sections, so it's impossible not to take a break at the summit. Arriving at the wide platform, elegant egrets rest at the edge of a large cemetery. We also sit along the rows of benches beside it for a rest. After resting, we regain the energy to continue exploring the second half of the journey.

Down the mountain, stone steps are paved throughout the trail for convenience and comfort. If one's in the mood for exploration, turning a corner mid-trail and choosing to go either left or right is a viable option. Going left leads one directly to the organic farm, where you can savor fresh organic vegetable meals—a satisfying choice for refreshment after physical activity. If you're enthusiastic, you can also consult the seasoned farmer who has studied qigong for years about the "Yuanji Method" and bring home some organic produce as well, leaving feeling completely satisfied and contented on the way home.

Going right, follow the path beside the pavilion to take a stroll through Xingtian Temple's "back garden." Walking along the densely shaded trail is especially cool and refreshing. At first, one might be amazed to see the rare, old banyan trees with intertwined roots in this urban setting. However, after taking a few more steps, one realizes that this landscape is quite ordinary within the garden, as there are traces of venerable old trees in every corner. If anyone wishes to pause for a moment, there are ample pavilions along the trail; hence, some pilgrims who visit Xingtian Temple also choose to stroll here afterward. Nevertheless, the network of small paths is complex and winding. Fortunately, the temple's distinct red walls and tiled roofs serve as a clear landmark, ensuring one won't get lost on the return trip!
