Shuishui Kiln is renowned for its use of White Spirit Clay and traditional brick wood-fired kilns. White Spirit Clay, a rare and high-quality clay, is particularly well-suited for ceramic products. In its early years, Shuishui had a workshop known as Hui-zi Kiln that specialized in producing functional ceramic items. However, due to the subsequent emergence of plastic products, Hui-zi Kiln eventually closed down. Following the 921 Earthquake, the local residents, with the assistance of the National Institute of Traditional Arts and Crafts, established a community ceramics program and reconstructed the Shuishui Kiln. Though it cannot fully replicate the original scale of Hui-zi Kiln, it has now become a popular destination for ceramic enthusiasts. All ceramics created in the Shuishui Kiln are unglazed. Instead of applying glazes, the oxidation of ash generated from the complete burning of wood during the firing process naturally colors and embellishes the ceramic surfaces, creating unique and ever-changing patterns. Thus, each finished product is one-of-a-kind, possessing distinct characteristics. In addition to the aesthetic quality of wood-firing ash effects, the high-grade clay results in an array of subtle tonal variations in the ceramic surface, making them no less attractive than glazed ceramics. Visitors can explore hands-on ceramic fun and create their own ceramic art in the traditional-style arts-and-crafts classroom.
