Step into the aroma-filled Shida 88 Tunnel, and you unlock a secret passage steeped in history. Towering clay jars line both sides of the entrance, while bold Chinese characters "八八坑道" (Shida 88 Tunnel) mark its gateway. Cool and consistent cave temperatures of 16–19°C (60.8–66.2°F) create an ideal environment to age premium wines, making this unique granite cavern a world-class wine celler. Located conveniently near the Matsu Distillery, the 200-meter tunnel once served as a military defense facility. Legends trace its origin to a pirate-hideaway shelter, later reinforced by the military during their administration of Matsu to accommodate an entire infantry battalion. Completed in 1974 after a decade-long construction, the tunnel's name honored the 88th birthday of Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Chiang Kai-shek). Since the end of martial law, Matsu Distillery has transformed this historic space into a wine haven. Its signature product—Shida 88 Aged Baijiu—bears the tunnel's name, becoming a prized representative of Matsu's distinctive liquor heritage. The main tunnel houses rare vintage bottles (discontinued since production ceased, with remaining stock over 15 years old), while the secondary chamber stores baijiu fermentation. The air is heavy with intoxicating scents—visitors often leave with a faint, pleasurable tipsiness. When the last of the treasure disappears from sale, this piece of history will remain only in memory.
