連江縣北竿鄉戰爭和平紀念公園
Please have the iron man come on duty - the battlefield park repurposed from military strongholds. The Taovo Mountain in Beigan Village, Matsu was originally a military strategic location. In 2003, the Matsu Management Office began transforming it into the War & Peace Memorial Park. The planning concluded with the completion of the 08 site, transforming it into Taiwan's first war memorial park centered on the themes of military and peace. The park spans a vast 38.8 hectares with an impressive scale, primarily featuring sites 06, 08, and 12, which collectively form the foundational prototype of Taiwan's first battlefield park. It is a museum complex themed around "War and Peace" and "Emotions and Memories." Due to strategic confidentiality needs, the sites are commonly referred to by numbers. The 06 and 08 sites adjacent to the War & Peace Memorial Park were constructed among rocky outcroppings. Outdoor exhibitions predominantly focus on the 08 site, while the 12 site spreads across Loushan and Bangshan. 【Site 06】 Site 06 is located on Daao Mountain in Beigan, offering panoramic views of Datou, Gaodeng, and Shiyu Islands. It consists of a minor tunnel containing an ammunition storage and multiple firing ports. Each firing port functions as a scenic window, allowing visitors to experience the sense of military life from that era. The tunnel remains damp, with small ditches along the steps and walls channeling dripping water to expel outside, making it easy to imagine how the stationed soldiers not only maintained constant vigilance but also endured harsh physical conditions. The tunnel's spaces include a machine gun port, main gun port, auxiliary gun port, ammunition storage, company commander's room, guidance officer's room, Zhongshan Hall, and soldiers' sleeping quarters. These facilities served as a vital winter-heating summer-cooling stronghold for defending the Beigan administrative center and airfield. Now, the tunnel is one of the most notable attractions in the War & Peace Park. 【Site 08】 Site 08 primarily displays weaponry exhibits, with anti-air batteries, trucks, tanks, and other heavy arms scattered throughout. Existing barracks are repurposed for equipment displays. Within the War Relic Exhibition Hall, machine guns, uniforms, and political propaganda materials are exhibited—all authentic artifacts that shape the historical atmosphere of the battlefield, reflecting the tense standoff across the Taiwan Strait. The site offers visitors the optimal space to immerse themselves in the former wartime scenery. This location utilizes the environmental advantages of Taovo Mountain and its expansive terrain. Constructed between rock walls and reefs, the main entrance leads through a steep flight of stairs built along sheer cliffs, creating a nerve-wracking experience that highlights the site's rugged and perilous terrain. The interior is tunnel-like in structure; despite its simplicity, it maintained good living facilities, even including a dedicated officer's bedroom, illustrating the scale of the stationed personnel. Site 08 condenses Matsu's wartime landscape and historical character through detailed explanations of regional military strategies, warfare knowledge, and simulated environments. It strings together extensive narrative sequences about Matsu's historical and military roles, allowing visitors to deeply understand and experience how Matsu has shaped historical events, transforming the temporal evolution of the region into a spatial exhibition for contemplation and preservation across generations.
