The great camphor tree is over seven hundred years old. It stands thirty meters tall in front of the bustling Dazhongye Temple in Jiji. During the early years of the Guangxu reign, believers rebuilt the original shrine into the present temple; the Dazhongye deity manifested and requested a statue of himself for worship. Because the ancient camphor is so old, local residents venerate it as a god, calling it “Camphor-Tree Gong.” Every year on the 23rd day of the eighth lunar month, countless visitors come to celebrate Camphor-Tree Gong’s birthday. In 1999 the township office obtained funding from the Environmental Protection Administration to build a leisure park where travelers can rest in the tree’s shade.
