In the early days, the Jincheng Lake was used to regulate the water level of the newly formed land by the sea. Nowadays, it serves as the main drainage outlet for the farmland in the Port South area. The intertidal zone of Jincheng Lake is home to many coastal creatures which attract birds to forage. The two sandbars in the middle of the lake serve as habitats for birds. The best time for birdwatching is during the high and low tides. Jincheng Lake is also the best place in the Hsinchu area for observing water birds.
