Breathtaking Stone Village Comparable to the Mediterranean Want to see Mediterranean-style scenery without traveling overseas? Head to Beigan in Matsu, where you can experience the romantic charm that rivals the picturesque stone mountain towns of Europe! Xuebi, in the Matsu Islands, stands as one of the most intact areas preserving traditional Mindong architecture of Matsu and is highly celebrated by domestic and international architectural, cultural, and artistic circles. In earlier years, villagers lived primarily by catching shrimps, but by the 1970s, the fishing industry declined, leading many residents to migrate for a livelihood. The abandoned houses left behind due to this population shift have now been systematically restored by the government into guesthouses and artistic spaces, reviving the once-vanished diversities of these stone houses. Strolling through this winding mountain town, you'll notice faded yet distinctive slogans on the walls of houses—like stepping into a time corridor. Today, visitors who spot these sights can't help but smile warmly. Built against the mountainside, the Xuebi settlement faces the sea and is arranged in steps according to the terrain, with orderly tiers and distinct sections such as North Mountain, South Mountain, and the central route. It was developed during the late Qing dynasty by the Chen family of Heshang, Longkou in Fujian. Most dwellings in this area are constructed with local granite. Among these, the most meticulously crafted residential house belonged to Chen Zhongping, the chief of the Peace and Salvation Army's Beigan unit during wartime, known as the "Pirate's House." In addition to its premium gray and white stone facades, it is the only house in Xuebi Village adorned with a carved stone lion on its rooftop, and its commanding elevated location gives it a grand and imposing appearance. Walking between the alleys of the stone houses, you can catch glimpses of the vast blue ocean from everywhere. Every turn in the path brings a new surprise, each section presenting its own charm. Why not choose a café to stop by? Gaze out at the sea and islands while listening to the gentle lapping of waves, and savor the delightful peace of the moment. The Belief in the Frog God—Protector of Xuebi Village Walking along the mountainous terrain, you'll not only enjoy the spectacular seascapes but also encounter Xuebi's unique local religious faith—evident in the many traces of the frog god. This deity, known as the "Iron Armored General," serves as the guardian spirit of Xuebi Village. When residents migrated from the Mindong region to Matsu, they brought their belief in this animal deity, a tradition that still survives today. Villagers often visit the Mazu Temple to seek guidance or perform worship rituals under the frog god's protection. A Flavorful Memory Worth Savoring—Don’t Miss the Hot Bowl of Old-Wine Vermicelli Noodles! When visiting Matsu during autumn or winter, you absolutely must try the old-wine vermicelli noodles! The clear, rich broth of fermented wine is combined with tender vermicelli, served with slices of red-fermented pork, fried eggs, and ingredients sautéed in sesame oil. Though the toppings are simple, the broth is exquisitely layered and aromatic, offering a soul-satisfying combination of wine-scented noodles that you won't want to miss when in Xuebi.
