The "Yangming Book House," originally known as the Zhongxing Guesthouse, was constructed from 1969 to 1970. It was historically used by President Chiang Kai-shek to host domestic and international dignitaries and as a summer retreat. It is the only official residence on Taiwan personally selected by him for construction. Today, it has become one of the important cultural and historical buildings within the Yangming Mountain National Park and offers visitors a range of services, including information inquiries and guided tours. It serves as a recreational site harmonizing natural landscapes and cultural heritage, as well as intellectual and emotional engagement. Tracing the humanistic transformation history of the Yangming Book House, it can roughly be divided into several major developmental phases starting from the Forest Park era, the Zhongxing Guesthouse era, the Central Party History Committee era, and the current national park management period.
Yangming Book House is located along Zhongxing Road, near the Eastsheng Road Flower Clock on Yangjin Highway, covering about 15 hectares. The area was originally a primary natural forest under the jurisdiction of the Yangming Mountain Administration and had been the site of the Scout Association's camping area in its early years. Despite the completion of the Zhongxing Guesthouse and its ancillary buildings in 1970, a portion of the original forest was preserved; during President Chiang Kai-shek’s stay at the Zhongxing Guesthouse, the strict security measures led to the conservation of rich natural ecosystems that are now present at the Yangming Book House and along the surrounding Zhongxing Road.
In 1975, the Central Party History Committee of the Kuomintang relocated its office to the site and consolidated archives from Caozhen, Qingtan, the Taxhall Documentation Center, and the "Chairman's Historical Materials" from Zhishan Book House to this location. Afterwards, the name of the Zhongxing Guesthouse was officially changed to "Yangming Book House."
On September 26, 1987, the Central Party History Committee of the Kuomintang donated the on-site buildings and management rights to the Ministry of the Interior, which subsequently assigned them to the Yangming Mountain National Park for operation and management. After a meticulous renovation and planning process, the Yangming Book House Management Station was established and officially opened to the public for visits on June 27, 1988. Additionally, to enhance visitor services, Dayi Hall was constructed. On September 11, 1990, the Yangming Book House Tourist Service Center was established, offering a range of services such as recreational information, video screenings, lightbox displays, model exhibitions, and guided explanations.
