The exceptionally favored "World's Number One Odd Spring," the Suao Cold Spring, located to the north of Suao Town, stands as one of the two natural subterranean treasures of the Lan-Yang Plain alongside Jiaoxi Hot Springs. According to legend, the early residents of Suao, often discovering dead insects in the cold spring water, wrongly believed it to be toxic and thus avoided it. During the Japanese colonial era, the first Japanese governor of Taiwan, Hirose Tsugutaka, on an expedition to Nan-Ao, bathed in the Suao Cold Spring along the way. Afterward, not only did he feel an extraordinary coolness in his body, but he also experienced a noticeable uplift in his mental state. Another Japanese military officer, Shinko Takeuchi, during a military operation, drank the cold spring water and immediately felt an incredible surge of energy! After retiring from military service, Shinko Takeuchi settled in Suao Town and began studying its composition, eventually proving that the cold spring water was not only non-toxic but also possessed special therapeutic properties. This remains a source of pride for Suao’s residents to this day. It is said that regular immersion in the Suao Cold Spring benefits the skin; it is regarded by local women as a natural beauty elixir, offering further advantages for ailments of the stomach and lungs, as well as conditions like kidney stones, bladder stones, gout, diabetes, and various chronic weight problems. This intriguing historical anecdote not only confirmed the spring’s medicinal qualities; Shinko Takeuchi also recognized its high concentration of carbon dioxide and uniquely refreshing taste, establishing Taiwan’s first soda factory in the shadow of the Qixing Mountain—the "Qixing Soda (or Beverage) Factory." This factory became famous for producing popular "Pepsi-Cola." Another Japanese businessman, Nakamura Shoichi, leveraged the spring’s distinctive properties to set up a factory near Bai Mi Bridge to produce "yokan" (a sweet red bean dessert). Although "Pepsi-Cola" is no longer produced today, "yokan" remains a representative specialty of the Suao Cold Spring. The unique Suao Cold Spring is a cold mineral spring with a constant temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. Its formation arises from the abundant rainfall in Yilan and the thick limestone geological features of Suao itself. The spring water is colorless, fragrantless, and transparent, with bubbles continuously emerging from underground, offering both bathing and drinking benefits as a carbonated spring. The fine bubbles constantly rising from the pool bottom create the sensation of being immersed in sugar-free soda—a truly unique experience.
