The temple originated as Bishan Hall in 1950, located inside the Minzu Road night market, enshrining Meizhou San-Ma and devoted to spirit-writing to save the world; its founder was Mr. Li Xing. By 1960, disturbed by the market’s clamor, it moved to a shop on Ren’ai Road, occupying 18 ping, and was formally renamed the Jade Emperor Temple. Xuantian Shangdi was added to the cult, still centered on spirit-writing to aid the world, with Mr. Li Xing as manager. Miraculous deeds spread its fame far and wide; incense flourished and worshippers thronged, until the site proved too cramped. In 1966 a search for new land began; under Xuantian Shangdi’s oracle a temporary temple was built on the present site, dedicated to the Jade Emperor. At first, funds were scant and everything was simple. Once the foundation was laid, imperial grace extended to all—every prayer was answered—and carriages and crowds surged. At every festival the space proved inadequate, so rebuilding on the same spot was proposed. After the resolution, fund-raising and land purchase began; construction started in 1971. Relying on the united efforts of faithful donors, enduring every hardship, the temple was finally completed in 1976, its gates opened for the people to worship.
