The Zhenhai Temple, located next to Zhenhai Park in Pingtung, was originally named Gonghe Hall. Established in 1984, it has grown to its present scale over nineteen years. Its most distinctive architectural feature is the use of “shipwright” boat-building techniques, so throughout the temple one can see flowing lines, gentle curves, and balanced arcs—artworks that fully express Pingtung’s maritime culture. In addition to this vibrant shipbuilding craft, the main hall’s ceiling displays European-church-style frescoes, and numerous 3-D woodcarvings, all created by the renowned master carver Cai Minghai and his apprentices from Xinyuan Township, Pingtung County. The delicate folds of the carved figures’ garments and their clearly defined hair reveal exquisite craftsmanship. To highlight local character, every section of carving carries meaning: aquatic motifs echo Donggang’s ocean culture; sixteen “apsara” attendants symbolize the harmony of yin and yang; Chinese knot cords and jade pendants showcase traditional Chinese art, while the interior walls bear various calligraphic works, filling the space with artistic atmosphere. Zhenhai Temple is thus not only a fusion of Chinese and Western architectural art, but also an expression of both power and beauty.
