The Foundation of Renhai Temple in Zhongli, ranking 4th among the Ministry of the Interior's Top 100 Religious Views of Taiwan, was established in the 6th year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1826), worshipping primarily Mazu for nearly 200 years. The temple was originally jointly built by thirteen villages in Zhongli, Pingzhi, and Yangmei, initially enshrining Guanyin Bodhisattva before later adding Mazu. It has undergone five renovation processes and remains the oldest temple in Zhongli, located in New Street and known as the "New Street Temple." As one of the most important places of faith in Zhongli, the temple is also called the "Zhongli Mazu Temple." Renhai Temple is the only temple left undemolished in Zhongli during the Japanese colonial era's cultural assimilation movements. The Holy Relic Pavilion beside the temple, rebuilt during the Shōwa era, preserves distinctive Shōwa-era wash stone and Baroque decorative features, showcasing the blending of cultural styles of the time. The temple layout and architectural style inherit traditional Chinese Southern architecture, comprising a front hall, main hall, and back hall arranged according to the three-hall system. The elevated gate stands separately in front of the temple, constructed with four pillars and three doors to create a grand atmosphere. During 2019 (R.O.C. year 108), the temple completed roof repairs and added the Sinking Incense Mazu Hall, enshrining a thousand-year-old Sinking Incense Mazu statue, 109 cm tall and weighing 53 kg, with an imposing demeanor rarely displayed in official attire and of unique significance comparable to Dajia Jinshen Mazu and Ilan Shanhua Mazu. Currently, Renhai Temple dazzles visitors with intricate wooden carvings and vibrant architecture, revitalizing the grandeur of this historic temple. Renhai Temple in Zhongli frequently hosts various festivals and folk events, including Mazu's birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, Ghost Festival "Ghost Month Banquets" and "Water Lantern Processions," and the "Mazu Returning to Her Palanquin" and "Circuit Procession" in the 11th lunar month, attracting pilgrimage from all regions for these major celebration events.
