The Li's Academy, also known as the Oxford Academy, was completed in 1882 and served as a base for the church to train missionaries, medical professionals, and educators at the time. In commemoration of the support from his hometown, Mackay named it "Oxford" after his hometown county, symbolizing the gratitude of "remembering the source of the water one drinks." Between 1872 and 1880, Dr. Mackay conducted open-air teachings by roadsides, under banyan trees, by streams, or by the sea. Recognizing the importance of establishing a school, he raised funds during his 1880 trip back to Canada and began constructing the school upon his return to Tamsui. The Oxford Academy can be considered the cradle of schools such as the University of Truth and Tamkang Middle School. The building has a strong traditional Chinese architectural style, personally designed by Dr. Mackay, featuring balanced symmetry, a north-facing, southward orientation, and eight small pagodas on the roof ridge instead of a cross. The construction materials include red bricks and Southern Fujian tiles, all imported from Xiamen. The red bricks were painted with oil to protect against wind and rain and were slightly flatter and longer than local bricks. The mixture used for the walls was made from cooked glutinous rice, lime, and molasses. The building has been designated as a national second-grade historical site.
