The rows of desks and chairs aligned in parallel face a statue of Zhu Xi at the front. Scholars' clear, loud readings echo as if resounding in one's ears. In the midst of the bustling urban area, Musiang Academy remains a quiet corner, allowing travelers who visit to deeply experience the atmosphere of students being inspired in lecture halls. This site is also one of the attractions on the free guided tours offered in Houpu Village. In golden times of history, Kinmen had a thriving scholastic tradition During the Southern Song Dynasty, Confucian scholar Zhu Xi served as county office head of Tong'an County in the 23rd year of the Xiaozong Emperor's Shaoxing era (1153 AD). At that time, Kinmen belonged to Tong'an jurisdiction. It is said that Zhu Xi visited Kinmen Island twice during his tenure. Kinmen residents, influenced by Zhu Xi's teachings, developed a more flourishing scholarly atmosphere. To express gratitude to Zhu Xi, Kinmen people built Musiang Academy in the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign of the Qing Dynasty (1780 AD), along with a Zhu Ci Temple at the academy's rear for ancestral worship. Musiang Academy is now the only surviving one of Kinmen's four ancient academies, while the Zhu Ci Temple behind it has been designated as a nationally protected cultural heritage site.
