Whitewater Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is called a "lake", there is actually no freshwater lake in the area. The name "Whitewater Lake" comes from the geographical situation of the old salt farm. Initially, the salt farm "Changxing Company", which was operated by Japanese and Tainan people, built a seawall in this area, but the seawall was not well constructed and often collapsed when typhoons came, causing seawater to flood in and turning the salt field into a white wave. "Whitewater Lake" got its name from this. Currently, after the implementation of the mechanized policy of salt drying by Taiwan Salt in 1983, it has turned into a quiet traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, the area around Whitewater Lake and Shou Island is now often flooded at high tide, and many residents have left due to the inconvenience of living here. However, the mysterious and somewhat desolate beauty of this place, combined with the unparalleled sunset sea view, has attracted more and more tourists to come and experience it. This has made Whitewater Lake gradually become a new emerging scenic spot on the coast of Chiayi.
