Dongmen / Jingfu Gate

2021-03-23
台北市中正區凱達格蘭大道
Dongmen, also known as Jingfu Gate, was the main passage of the Taipei City to Xikou (now Songshan). It faced the important port of Keelung in northern Taiwan, and therefore bore the important responsibility of defense, with great significance for national defense. At that time, the street leading to the East Gate inside the city, "Dongmen Street," is today's Koxinga Avenue. Nowadays, since it is located right in front of the Presidential Office, it has become a must-pass route for many rallies and parades, bringing countless opportunities for the East Gate to appear on camera. It can be said to be the most familiar city gate to all Taiwanese people, and has become an important hub for politics and transportation in this area. Among the five city gates of the old Taipei City, the East Gate was the most delicate in craftsmanship. The plaque reads "Jingfu Gate." Its architectural structure is similar to that of the North Gate, both built with thick brick walls on top of stone foundations, extending all the way down to the eaves, like an unbreakable square fortress. Inside the double-layered brick walls, there is a wooden structure. The roof is a "Xie Shan" style with four sloping sides, simple and elegant. The eaves are decorated with green glazed hollow tiles, which are very elegant. Unfortunately, it was later rebuilt in the style of northern Chinese palatial city towers. However, the stone base and the round arch door are original materials. The door opening is a semi-circular arch made of stone slabs, with the frame preserving the thunder pattern decoration, still possessing considerable historical value.
