Beitou Library

2017-06-30
The Beitou Branch of the Taipei City Library is the first green building library in Taiwan, located within the lush, ecologically rich Beitou Park, adjacent to the Hot Spring Museum. The library has one basement level and two ground levels, covering a total area of 650 ping. This branch is located within the green Beitou Park, where the fragrance of books indoors and the sounds of birds outdoors complement each other, making reading a pleasant and enjoyable activity. The roof is a lightweight ecological roof with solar panels that can generate 16 kilowatts of electricity. It also features deep balconies and vertical wooden lattices to reduce heat radiation entering the building, thus achieving energy-saving effects. The green roof and sloped grass areas help retain water, which is naturally drained into a rainwater collection tank. The collected water is then used to water plants and flush toilets, achieving greening and reducing water resource waste. The building uses wood and steel materials, both of which are recyclable, reducing the environmental impact of waste. Regarding indoor health and environmental indicators, in addition to termite prevention for wood materials, ecological coatings are used and unnecessary renovation projects are avoided, reducing pollution and the release of toxic substances, thus preventing adverse effects on human health. In February 2005, this branch was awarded the preliminary certificate of the nine indicators of the Green Building Program by the Ministry of the Interior. These nine indicators include "Biodiversity," "Greening," "Site Water Retention," "Water Resources," "Daily Energy Saving," "Carbon Dioxide Reduction," "Indoor Health and Environment," "Waste Reduction," and "Improvement of Wastewater and Garbage." In July 2007, it received the Green Building Diamond Certification. It also won the "Excellent Award" of the 2007 National Construction Excellence Award, the first prize of the 6th Taipei City Government Quality Innovation Award, was nominated for the 6th Far East Outstanding Architectural Design Award, won the first prize of the 2007 "Taiwan Architecture Award," the first prize of the 6th Taipei City "Urban Landscape Award," the excellent award of the 8th Council of State Council's Public Engineering Quality Excellent Award, the "Excellent Green Building Design Award" of the Ministry of the Interior in 2007, was nominated for the Global Excellence in Construction Award of the 2008 Global Architecture Golden Award, and in 2012, it was selected by the American website Flavorwire.com as one of the "25 Most Beautiful Public Libraries in the World." When visiting Beitou, in addition to taking a hot spring bath, you can also visit the Beitou Library to enjoy the forest bath of the fragrance of books and greenery!       Beitou Branch of the Taipei City Library (Chinese Introduction Video)
