新北市瑞芳區猴硐遊客中心
Located near the Jinzi Monument section of the Danlan Old Trail’s northern route, the Houdong Visitor Center was renovated and completed in June 2022. Its design emphasizes sustainability and harmony with the surrounding environment. A semi-open roof and open-air corridor allow natural light and air to flow freely through the central courtyard. The roof is clad in a red membrane system that echoes the red-brick old houses of the settlement while blending with the green of the natural landscape. The low-hanging roof delineates the boundary between interior and exterior spaces and channels rainwater into a rain garden, reflecting the local ecology and highlighting natural cycles, creating a landmark effect of “a single red dot amid a sea of green” beneath the forested hillside. Beyond continuing its function as a visitor center and rest stop, the new design provides more shaded rest areas for hikers and cyclists to pause and recharge. The exhibition space in the building’s right wing uses curated displays to promote the century-old Danlan Old Trail and the hundred-year mining history of the Keelung River, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural heritage.
