Penghu County Cultural Affairs Bureau’s Penghu Ocean Resources Museum is divided into Building A and Building B. Building A showcases the cultural history of Penghu’s oceans, the evolutionary history of marine life, Penghu’s coral resources, rock and mineral resources, the geology and topography of the Penghu archipelago, and intertidal displays and film appreciation. Building B focuses on traditional fishing gear, marine ranches, realistic depictions of fishing village life, the evolution of fishing vessels, future underwater worlds, the types of fisheries in Penghu, economically viable aquatic organisms in Penghu, the distribution of economically viable marine resources and fishing methods, and underwater landscapes. The creation of the Ocean Resources Museum dates back to 1987 (ROC 76), when the National Development Council of the Executive Yuan commissioned Dr. Zhang Kun‑Xiong of the Institute of Advanced Engineering to lead the planning, emphasizing the museum’s role in promoting regional marine resources and cultural characteristics. In 1989 (ROC 83), with the assistance of Dr. Zheng Ming‑xiu, the first phase of construction was completed. Subsequent phases—second and third—were carried out from 1990 (ROC 84), and the museum officially opened on April 1996 (ROC 86). Its exhibits center on Penghu’s ocean culture, including biological evolution, intertidal fishing, near‑shore fisheries, realistic fishing village scenes, ecological conservation, and sustainable resource use. It guides visitors to explore and discover Penghu’s diverse marine culture, marine ecological scenery, marine biodiversity, environmental changes, and the sustainable use of marine resources, thereby rooting marine cultural education and inspiring people to adopt a new lifestyle of marine conservation.
